Our Origin: Inspired by Internet of Environments
Carbon Timestamps was inspired by the groundbreaking concept of the Internet of Environments (IoE), a vision where interconnected sensors and devices monitor environmental data in real time, secured by blockchain for transparency and trust. In 2020, IBM and VIDT Datalink (now VIDT DAO) collaborated on a project that brought this vision to life: the Corona Safety Indicator. This system used sensors in public spaces to measure air quality and CO2 levels, assessing COVID-19 transmission risks, with all data timestamped on the blockchain to ensure its integrity and verifiability. This innovative use of technology to monitor environmental conditions and provide transparent, trustworthy data sparked the idea for Carbon Timestamps.
We saw the potential to apply a similar approach to the carbon offset market—a space where transparency and trust are often lacking. Just as the Internet of Environments used blockchain to verify environmental data in real time, we set out to create a platform that uses blockchain to certify carbon offsets, ensuring their authenticity and impact. From this foundation, Carbon Timestamps was born, with a mission to bring the same level of accountability and innovation to the fight against climate change.
